William Spaniel explains why the optimal first move often involves thinking about double letter spaces--even though you can't even play on them in the first move!
As someone mentioned in the comments, CREPE is probably a better move, as it keeps the P off of the double word column. But note that this still avoids placing the vowel adjacent to the double letter square.
