Since the dawn of travel guides, the industry has not successfully evolved past the printed medium. Even mobile electronic travel applications are little more than glorified transcriptions of static data. Therefore, the opportunity exists to create a much richer, interactive experience with an innovative combination of modern tools.

The Unfold Travel platform is being developed as both a smart and social companion to aid in exploring a city with a mobile phone serving as a personal tour guide. Through the integration of social media, users are able to "unfold" information about the city which then leads to a journal of their travels to be shared with family and friends. The process of interacting with the application allows the user to earn uMiles, which are also available for purchase through PayPal. Users must spend uMiles to unfold and explore the content, though all landmarks are marked on the map. Custom tours can also be created by selecting filters on the map. It is still possible to explore a new city in offline mode and even unfold travel from a distance, but the PayPal and Facebook components will only work with a mobile connection.

Unfold Travel is being designed as a highly scalable platform. For the initial release of Unfold Stockholm in June, resources in Stockholm, Sweden will be utilized. Enhancements will be based on application updates, release of multi-language versions and additional feature implementations. Unfold Travel will be expanded to support other cities, targeting events such as those in London and Sao Paulo.
