Yesterday we reported that many smartphone users on AT&T's (NYSE:T) 3G network had reported a 100kbps limit on data upload throughput. Users of Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and many Android-based devices were reporting service issued over the July 4th holiday weekend in many markets including New York City and Los Angeles. Well, apparently AT&T has identified that a glitch in certain Alcatel-Lucent hardware has been the culprit. The company said:

"AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent jointly identified a software defect -- triggered under certain conditions - that impacted uplink performance for Laptop Connect and smartphone customers using 3G HSUPA-capable wireless devices in markets with Alcatel-Lucent equipment. This impacts less than two percent of our wireless customer base. While Alcatel-Lucent develops the appropriate software fix, we are providing normal 3G uplink speeds and consistent performance for affected customers with HSUPA-capable devices."

Shares of AT&T are trading fractionally higher.
