Fun Facts PRO

Google has now become a household name and part of our daily lives (along with Apple products!). There are some interesting and fun facts about the company, however, that many of us might not be aware of! Here are 5 interesting facts about google that you probably did not know!

5- "Google" was originally named "Backrub". This is because their algorithm ranked a webpage based on how many "back links" it had.

4- "Google" was supposed to be named "Googol" (referring to a specific large number). When the founders searched the Internet domain name registry database to see if the name is available, they mistakenly spelled it as "google.com". They liked the new name and it became the name of the company!

3- Google does not hold the patent for their popular PageRank algorithm. Stanford University does. Google has exclusive license rights on the patent from Stanford University. Stanford received 1.8 million shares from Google in exchange for the use of the patent and sold the shares in 2005 for $336 million!

2- The "I'm Feeling Lucky" button probably costs Google about $110 million a year. When you click on that button it just takes you to the top search result. In other words, you skip all the ads that Google makes money on.

1- Google's first tweet on twitter was: "I'm 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010" which means "I'm feeling lucky" in binary.

Bonus fact: Google's PageRank algorithm not only can rank pages for search engines, but it can also find the species that might become extinct. Here is how: A "back link" is similar to "species that another species can eat to survive". Therefore, the more "back links" that a species has, the more likely it might NOT become extinct.
